History: How did this name come about? Depends on who you ask... Virginia historical society and Norfolk public library claim the earliest map of "Hampton Roads channel" was made in 1806. We changed our postmark around the 1980's (aka changed our official address with the state) to Hampton Roads and the locals have held to it ever since.
Unique Features: Hampton Roads offers beautiful parks and several different bodies of water, each of which offer not only modern day leisure and activates, but are also full of history. For example, in the 1600's the English colonists first arrived to the Greater Hampton Roads.
Geography: The Hampton Roads Community can be broken up into two areas: The Southside and the Peninsula. The Southside is comprised of 5 major cities including: Suffolk, Portsmouth, Norfolk, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach. The Peninsula is comprised of 2 major cities: Hampton and Newport News.
